For the first few decades of my career as a freelance writer, I had a sure-fire, tried-and-true way to find new clients in the roller-coaster world of freelancing.
It worked brilliantly for nearly 30 years. Until it didn’t.
I could blame the Great Recession of 2008, the resulting deluge of new freelancers, and the re-organization of the business world. After all, they all impacted my career.
However, during the same period, one the biggest waves of freelance work opportunities emerged — content marketing. With it’s foundation firmly planted in writers’ area of expertise — content – it created a bonanza for writers.
The real reason my old system wasn’t working any longer is that how freelancers find new clients has changed. Once I realized this, I abandoned by old system and created a whole new system for finding freelance prospects and nurturing them into clients. And it worked like the proverbial charm.
Make it Rain!
For most of us, freelancing is a feast or famine enterprise. My favorite expression has always been “when it rains it pours,” because finding enough work can be a struggle, then suddenly there is too much work. That would be followed by another slowish period, which would be followed by another period of too much work.
I accepted this fact of freelance life — and rolled with it. But my new system changed everything.
I launched my new system in August 2015. It worked so well that I was immediately deluged with work assignments. When I say immediate, I mean the very day I contacted my new prospects.
It turns out there really is a large number of companies who desperately need quality content for their content marketing campaigns!
That’s not all. Unlike my former client-hunting strategy, my new system included a brilliant, and pain-free, follow-up step. Pain-free is the key, because (you may have experienced this) it’s challenging to follow up with prospects without being too pushy or annoying.
Well, I cracked that nut, too!
What’s more, thanks to the deluge of work, I gained two career-boosting advantages:
- I could pick and choose my projects.
- I could raise my rates.
Building a Staircase to Freelance Nirvana
My new freelance-prospecting system works so much better than my old system. In fact, it works so well that I believe I’ve achieved a whole new level of freelancing — a level I call “Freelance Nirvana.”
This name reflects several advantages I’ve gained from my new self-promotion process, including easier self-promotion, easier client hunting, and greater control over my career. Bottom line: I’m more Zen about my career than I’ve ever been before — and that feels great!
1. Marketing Myself is Easy.
I’ve never heard a single freelancer say they liked marketing themselves. They hate it. I hated it, too. However, whenever I needed to promote myself, I just grit my teeth and did it. After a cold start, I would get into a self-promotional “zone.” Once in that headspace, selling myself was a little easier. But the zone was short lived.
But the minute I found enough clients, I would abruptly stop my marketing and do the work. Eventually the work would die down or dry up completely. Then I’d have to crank up the marketing machine again and start over. That was my life and I accepted it.
Now, I can honestly say that I’m happy my old system doesn’t work today, because it forced me to create a new system that is so much easier and more effective. The pain of my old way is history.
2. Finding New Clients is Easy.
I spent most of the summer of 2015 creating my new Freelance Nirvana self-promotion system from scratch. I used the popular “lean marketing” approach that includes: create an idea, build it, test it, learn from it, and modify it.
As I developed pieces of my new system, I would test them, make any necessary changes, and keep going until I’d honed my new process into a lean, mean self-promotional machine.
It was a painstaking process. But the pain of creating something totally new was a one-time experience. After that, I could simply add occasional inputs into my system to keep it chugging along. This was a night-and-day difference from my old system, which required me to go through the pain of re-starting my self-promotion engine over and over. Now I could actually start creating sustained traction.
I finally reached the point of launching the first major test of my new system. I immediately gained several new clients. In fact, I had so much work, I was juggling multiple projects for a while, like a plate-spinning carnival worker.
Eventually the tidal wave of new work eased off a bit. That’s when I launched Phase 2 — my pain-free prospect follow up system — to recharge my workflow.
3. Abundance is Power.
One of the best aspects of suddenly finding the keys to the freelance kingdom is that it has given me a new kind of power — namely, the power to choose clients I really want to work with and to charge fair rates.
The secret to charging more is having too many clients. Since you can’t work for them all, you can turn away those who don’t want to pay your rates, along with the projects that don’t excite you and clients you don’t particularly like.
One of the things I was specifically looking for is clients who will pay me a retainer in exchange for a certain amount of work every month. I consider retainers the Holy Grail of a lucrative freelance career. One freelancer I know calls her retainer clients her “bread and butter” jobs, because they consistently put food on the table.
Even though I’m still flush with freelance work six months later, this time I have no plans to stop promoting myself. Why would I when it’s so easy? And who knows, I might even give myself a raise this year!
Introducing the New Freelance Nirvana Workshop
Would you like to learn more about my new Freelance Nirvana system? If so, here’s the best part: I’m sharing my entire new system with other freelancers in a new Beta Workshop!
It’s a Beta project because I’ll be asking for feedback from the first group of freelancers to attend the Workshop. As a result, I’m offering the Workshop at a deep discount — only $297. When Freelance Nirvana launches after the Beta Workshop (as a workbook) it will be priced at $397, if not more. Plus, you’ll gain the first-mover advantage — so you can beat your competitors to the marketplace.
Believe me — it’s worth every penny (it’s probably worth a lot more when you consider the impact it could have on your income). If I’d had this system years ago, it would have changed my life. My former years of highs and lows on the freelance roller coaster would have been replaced by a much smoother ride with mostly highs.
What’s more, my new system would have saved me buckets of blood, sweat, and tears!
